Tom O'Bedlam's Night Out

  1. TOM O'BEDLAM'S NIGHT OUT - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "Tom O'Bedlam's Night Out and Other Strange Excursions," by Darrell Schweitzer, published by Ganley in 1985.

    In this picture, vagabond Tom O'Bedam is flirting with a dark-haired girl under the light of the silvery moon, with the magic of love in his heart. The most beautiful lines I have every read about love were written by Edgar Allen Poe in his verse about, "Annabelle Lee";

    "And this maiden she lived with no other thought
    Than to love and be loved by me.

    She was a child and I was a child,
    In this kingdom by the sea,
    But we loved with a love that was more than love,
    I and my Annabelle Lee -

    And neither the angels in Heaven above,
    Nor the demons down under the sea,
    Can ever dissever my soul from the soul,
    Of the beautiful Annabelle Lee". . .

    The words flow along with a haunting rhythmic beauty.
